Biography

Željko Reiner is a Full Professor (tenure) at the School of Medicine, University of Zagreb, and Director of the University Hospital Centre Zagreb. He received his MD and PhD in Zagreb and FRCP in London. He was member of the World Health Organization (WHO) Executive Board in Geneva and chaired the WHO Tobacco-free Europe Committee. From 1993 to 1998 he served as state secretary for health, and from 1998 to 2000 as minister of health in Croatia. He is President of the Croatian Academy of Medical Sciences, a full member of the Croatian National Academy of Sciences and Arts and chairman of its Atherosclerosis Research Committee. He is also an honorary member of the Academy of Medical Sciences of Bosnia and Herzegovina and President of the National Health Council of Croatia. He is a member of the European Atherosclerosis Society (EAS) Executive Committee and a member of the Practice Guidelines Committee of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC). In the European Association for Cardiovascular Prevention and Rehabilitation (EACPR) he is chair of the Science and Guidelines Committee and is a member of the EACPR Board.
